If it seems like everything is on a knife’s edge both in your life and on the world stage, well, that’s exactly the case. It’s just a coincidence that the astrology of November 2024 is also some of the most intense astrology of the year — yet here we are, so let’s dive in and understand it better, so we can cope and stay calm.
November 1st brings us one of the wildest New Moon moments of 2024 – a year full of crazy intense lunations. This one feels like a roiling cauldron boiling over.
Here’s what I said about it last night (in my Halloween/voting costume, forgive the cat ears and nose. I am still a serious person.)
This New Moon marks the entryway to November by setting the doorframe and its hinges on fire, and then burning down the entire house — on purpose. This isn’t a trick or treat, it’s a purposeful and direct attempt to burn it all down. Scorpio asks us what we’re willing to kill so that we can be born anew. Maybe, hopefully, this time it’s white supremacist heteropatriarchy.
It’ll be up to us to rise from the embers like a phoenix when this is all over. At 8:47 am ET on November 1st, this lunation perfects. The most salient aspect of this lunation is the insatiable intensity of the two rulers of Scorpio building toward their opposition.
Mars, the traditional ruler of Scorpio, and Pluto, the modern ruler of Scorpio, are just days from their exact opposition at the moment of the New Moon. Mars and Pluto will oppose each other again on January 1st, this time with Mars in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius (and then again in the spring). But because Pluto will never again be in Capricorn, this one hits different.
It is the signature aspect of the election and post-election period, even though it will separate and Mars will leave Cancer a few hours later. The fact that it happens two days before Election Day and then again five days before January 6, the day we certify our elections, is truly remarkable. Here’s what I said about this in my November preview post last week:
That visceral sensation you’re experiencing, as if your whole body is locked in a crucible slowly crushing you as your heart beats out of your chest? That’s a hungry, malefic Mars in Cancer inching toward its opposition with Pluto at the final degree of Capricorn, symbolizing the end of a 15-year era defined by the cruelties of late capitalism. On the other side, we will be new people in a new nation, no matter the outcome.
This aspect culminates at 6:37 am ET on November 3rd, as Daylight Saving Time ends, just 48 hours before the most momentous Election Day of our lifetimes. It is, thus, the signature aspect of the election. It may feel dark, but accessing joy is crucial now, even as we hurtle toward the unknown.
The first few days of November aren’t just about the New Moon and Mars/Pluto opposition, however. There is a veritable cornucopia of aspects before election day, some quite promising and a little bit sexy (Venus opposite Jupiter) and some stressful as hell, involving Saturn and Chiron. In short, it’s likely to feel chaotic, with energy, emotions, and events bouncing all over the place.
Focusing on the darkness, doom and gloom of the Mars/Pluto opposition without considering the glorious optimism of the Venus/Jupiter opposition on the same day is mere folly. Hours after that deeply challenging aspect perfects, Venus in joyful Sagittarius opposes Jupiter in Gemini — these two benefic planets aligned in an exact opposition feel like an antidote to the dark, dystopic energy of Mars and Pluto locked in a battle to the death.
In other words, if we choose the Venus/Jupiter vision, we can have a election that looks to the future and is buoyed by optimism, bringing joy to the polls, good music and laughter, and embracing pleasure and bodily autonomy despite myriad challenges. We can have a country and a world where women (symbolized by Venus) are FREE. That, obviously, requires voting for Kamala Harris despite your criticisms of the Democratic Party. You can say yes to Venus and Jupiter, keep your democracy, and retain the ability to protest, lobby, and convince your leaders that American hegemony has limits and must be constrained.
If we don’t vote for Kamala Harris, we will usher in a state run by Christian Nationalists and cruel misogynistic billionaires who can commit wanton violence against women “whether they want it or not” — Trump literally said these words about women and their bodies and their rights two days ago. If you don’t vote for Kamala Harris, you are electing Elon Musk and Peter Thiel to be our shadow presidents. Billionaires who plan to remove all our rights: free speech, bodily autonomy, the right to vote, and the right to exist in an unruly body of any kind. If you fail to vote for Kamala Harris or protest vote, within a year, this dark vision will have come to life. They have extensive plans, they know who they will hire to put them into place, and they wrote it all down in Project 2025.
We can elect an adjudicated rapist who already told Netanyahu that HE can do whatever he wants to Palestinians. Do you see the theme here? The worst of the last 250 years of subjugation of women, minorities, immigrants, children, queer people — that is Mars in Cancer (this is the “protection” of home and women, with violence) opposite Pluto in Capricorn (this is capitalism at its most extreme). The choice is yours, America.
Two sign changes early in the month indicate the potential for a vibe shift, at least a temporary one — Mercury moves into Sagittarius on the 2nd and Mars enters Leo on the 3rd — just a few hours after opposing Pluto. These last two are very interesting and worth watching, because both of these planets will station retrograde in the coming weeks. Notice what’s going on in your world and prepare to reflect on what you need to understand, tweak, and integrate when these retrograde stations come around later this month and in early December. These openings of the retrograde shadows apply to the way the election will be decided as the votes are counted, and then as attempts to steal it are forged in the months ahead.
Election Day itself is strangely quiet, with the Moon in Sagittarius going void at 2:23 am ET until 10:17 am, and then moving into Capricorn for the remainder of the day. The only aspect for the rest of the day is a quincunx with Mars at 11:15. This looks somber and serious and strategic, like everyone is doing the business of voting and then parking themselves in front of the TV to take in the data supplied by Steve Kornaki and his magic khaki pants. It feels fitting that we meet the end of the Pluto in Capricorn era with an Election Day Moon in Capricorn.
The kind of semi-sweet portion of the month — (I am positing a sugar high from what seems like a possible Harris win) is in effect through the 9th when Venus in Sagittarius squares Neptune in Pisces. This is a rose-colored glasses effect for all of us, in our relationships and in our relationship with the world and the media’s lens on explaining what’s happening out there.
Saturn stations direct in Pisces on the 11th, and this feels more decisive to me, I think by now we’ll know, at least those of us who live on Earth 1, who won the election. The Full Moon in Taurus is the same day, and it’s conjunct Uranus, so it seems like half the country is angry about that math and in for a shock.
The 18th is another day I suspect we’ll be glued to our TV’s and phones trying to figure out what in the actual fuck is happening, thanks to Mercury opposite Jupiter and the Sun trine Neptune. All bets are off after Mercury stations retrograde on the 25th, with an absolute shitshow of a Thanksgiving for those of you forced to dine with your crazy Republican uncle. Condolences, that’s not going to be a fun event.
